We have finished work on training the RuScan scanner to assess sawn hardwood (aspen, linden, birch). Of all the known at the world market transverse scanners for dry and green lumber sorting, sawn hardwood sorting is possible only with our hardware and software.
We put much efforts, studied thousands of lumber samples, made several visits to the site. The peculiarities of defects and variety formation for sawn hardwood did not allow just to modify the scanning method for softwood. We had to make significant improvements to the processing technology and to the general view of the quality setting interface.
The whole process took almost 2 years and now the "RuScan BIRCH LINDEN ASPEN" software module has been successfully implemented at the VOSTOK-RESURS enterprise* for sorting both dry and green lumber. Considering the large volume of hardwood in the enterprise's production program, this is an important step in the development of technology to improve the quality of sorting and reduce manual labour.
*VOSTOK-RESURS (the Udmurt Republic, Russia) performs a full cycle of forestry activities from harvesting to wood processing into finished products. The enterprise has a modern sawmill complex with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters of lumber per year.
The area of forest plantations in the Udmurt Republic is 1910.1 thousand hectares, of which coniferous species account for 51.4%, and deciduous species account for 48.4% (clause 2.7 of the Forest Plan of the Udmurt Republic).
According to the report on monitoring the economic activities of LLC TPK VOSTOK-RESURS, in 2019 the volume of harvesting of aspen, linden and birch amounted to 189,351 cubic meters or 77.2% of the total volume of harvesting for the main species.
